“Thank You Notes and Gratitude” by Bev Scott

The Saturday after Thanksgiving I opened a thank you note in the U.S. mail from a couple who joined us for Thanksgiving dinner.  I was touched by their note and by their promptness.  I felt very grateful for their friendship in my life.  These positive feelings of gratitude reminded me of an article in The Wall Street Journal last week entitled “Thank You. No, Thank You” describing how grateful people are happier and healthier. Read more...

“Positive Aging as a Social Movement” by Bev Scott

“Positive aging is a social movement.”  I was speaking with a fellow participant at the 4th Annual Positive Aging Conference in Los Angeles in early December.  I resonated with the idea of a social movement .  After all, many of us in this generation have participated in other social movements:  civil rights, women's rights, gay rights.  Why not a social movement to change the image of aging to a more enlightened and inspiring view from the “dreadful ‘D' words” as Bill Sadler writes, “decline, disease, dependency, depression and decrepitude.”  Unfortunately, many of us have internalized the models and norms that lead us to adopt the fears and attitudes, these ‘D' words, like old scripts from the past.  Participants in this lively conference, instead have followed new scripts for their 3rd acts: re-invention, rejuvenation, re-education, renewal and re-creation, offering inspiring role models for us all. Read more...

“The Moment of Reinvention” by Patricia Cavanaugh

I knew it was time to leave my clinic work when I woke up and felt I could not go to work one more day.  Another sleepless night, and I was full of dread.  I had to make a change.  I had been serving the poor and addicted population of Oakland, California for close to 18 years.  I was burned out and I knew I needed help.  I asked friends for a referral for a career counselor.  With her help, I developed a plan to make a change in two years when I turned 65.  I wanted to continue working but with a different group of people.  As we know when you make a decision, God responds.  Read more...

Holiday Challenges by Patricia Cavanaugh

I just got off the phone with Southwest Airlines . I am planning a trip to southern California to visit my children for Thanksgiving and was delighted to see the senior rates still available. So the season begins full of delights but often fraught with challenges.

The holidays have changed for many "boomers" and the "matures". Our children are grown and with homes and families of there own.  What was once a simple family affair has turned in to a complex event calling for thoughtful planning and psychological awareness. Read more...

Putting Off Retirement? by Bev Scott

Have your dreams of retirement become lost in a distant haze?  Are wondering if you will ever be able to quit work?  With the deepest postwar recession many of us found our savings and housing values decimated by the market meltdown.  With the continuing uncertainty of a full economic recovery, we are wondering if retirement is even possible. Conscious Grandmothering by Bev Scott
I was walking my youngest grandson to pre-school one day when he asked, "Grandma, why don't you work?"   I asked him what he meant since I was unsure what he was really asking.  His response indicated what he had noticed...that Mommy and Daddy, and G.C. (my partner and his other local grandma) all left in the morning and went to work but that I didn't do that.  As I began to explain to him about working from my home office and that I worked part time so I had time to do other things like playing with him, I was in touch with how incredibly grateful I am to be a part of my...Read more...

An Unexpected Success by Patricia Cavanaugh
I had a new coaching client come to me last year.  She just couldn't seem to get focused about her next steps.  She felt that something needed to change but she didn't know what.  Her 60th birthday was looming; she wanted to be able to truly celebrate it and not dread it.  She felt over-whelmed and unfocused.  Her thoughts were spinning; she wasn't able to sleep at night. At first she wasn't sure she wanted to commit to the time required by coaching.  I put the amount of time we would spend (1 1/2hour every two weeks) in perspective.  How much time was being used up to worry?  When we added up the "worrying" hours, she was spending more time worrying than the 3 hours a month of meetings.

Are You a Boomer, Ready for Your Next Act? By Becky Ringler & Christina Garcia
Are you are a boomer or a member of the silent generation wondering if you are ready for a change? Are you raising questions about what is next? Are you avoiding retirement? You may be ready for your 3 rd Act. Are you asking yourself some of these questions:

How can I give back to my community, my world?
What can I do to bring more excitement, stimulation and fun back into my life?
How can I find more balance in my life?
How could I start a new business?
How can I slow down and still pursue my life's work?
I can't or don't want to retire, but how can I work less?
How do I stay healthy, vital and energetic as I get older?
Given that my time is finite, what do I want to leave as a legacy?
What is it I am being called to do at this time in my life?
What should I do to fill my longing to be creative?
How do I add meaning to my life?

If you are asking some of these questions, you are ready to design the life you want for your next act, your 3rd Act.  You are ready to identify what you want to take forward from your 2 nd act; take charge of your fears of getting old; create a vision of the life you want and choose how you want to be engaged and fulfilled.

We support you in designing your 3 rd Act in our workshops and coaching sessions. Read more...

"In Search of Wisdom” by Bev Scott

This time of turmoil, economic melt-downs, religious and ethnic strife, natural and man-made disasters, war and political upheaval, has raised questions for me and many of those with whom I have conversations.  We are all searching for alternatives.  We are asking, “where is the wisdom to see our way through these challenges?”  The political environment, as we head into the final day of mid-term elections, is divisive, filled with accusations and lacks honesty and truth.  Many claim to have answers. Do they? There seems to be little room for anyone to question, wonder or explore the possibilities.
